Essentially providing some basic advice on security controls, following easy steps to give your business a higher but achievable Security Profile. It was introduced by the National Cyber Security Centre an offshoot of GCHQ. Information on Cyber Essentials can be found here on the NCSC website
The scheme is separated into two parts: Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus. The Plus version is much more in depth however as a small business, the entry level version is achievable. It states:
Use a Firewall to secure your internet connection.
Choose the most secure settings for your devices and software.
Control who has access to your data and services.
Protect yourself from Viruses and Malware.
Keep your devices and software up to date.
The applicant carries out a Self Assessment by answering 15 questions in an online portal provided by the certification body.
If all 15 questions are answered to a satisfactory level, the business is awared with Cyber Essentials. On recieving the award, the business gains the right to advertise Cyber Essentials Certified on their business correspondance including website and emails. The business also qualifies for free Cyber Security Insurance.
